Menopause And Hair Loss

Hair loss can be caused by a number of factors, and one of them is menopause. Menopausal women should check with their doctors first to confirm whether or not menopause is causing their hair loss.

Understanding The Link Between Menopause And Hair Loss

The hair is one's "crowning glory" and that is how most women consider their locks. However, the onset of menopause could be devastating for women because one of the symptoms of menopause is hair loss. There is good news, though. Menopause and hair loss do not commonly happen at the same time. In other words, hair loss is not a common symptom of menopause. The more common menopause symptoms are hot flashes, anxiety attacks, mood swings and night sweats.

Menopause: Not the Only Cause of Hair Loss

Menopause is only one of the many factors that can trigger hair loss. This is the reason menopause and hair loss are not really considered a serious pair. Menopause, however, can cause the thyroid gland to malfunction, and this in turn can trigger hair loss. Menopausal women who develop a thyroid problem and gain weight are highly likely to loose hair, including their eyebrows and eyelashes. Women who observe a sudden spike in their weight along with hair loss are recommended to have their thyroid gland checked out by a doctor.

Treatments to Prevent Hair Loss

Menopause and hair loss have been the center of numerous studies and discussions. When menopause is identified as the cause of hair loss, there really is not much that can be done about it, since menopause is not a reversible problem. What can be done, however, is to symptomatically treat the cause of hair loss. This kind of treatment include hormone replacement therapy or HRT and potent herbal treatments to promote hair growth and prevent hair loss.

Herbal Treatments for Hair Loss

Nowadays, many herbal treatments that directly address the issue of menopause and hair loss are available. Although these herbal treatments are effective in regenerating hair, the results are not immediately visible. It usually takes two to three months before any results can be observed. By this time, however, women have already switched medication thinking that the previous one they tried does not work. Whether a treatment is for menopause and hair loss or for another type of problem, it is important to wait at least two to three months before switching to another medication.

More on Menopause and Hair Loss

Very little research has been done on the relationship between menopause and hair loss. The main reason for the lack of available research is that menopause and hair loss are rarely encountered simultaneously. And women who have been diagnosed with hair loss caused by menopause are able to quickly remedy the problem by having a simple hormone replacement therapy.

As previously mentioned, hair loss can be caused by many factors, among them are fungal infection, bacterial infection, dandruff and stress. Women who suspect that their hair loss is being caused by menopause should check first with a doctor if other factors are triggering the hair loss. Only then can they have their problem treated effectively.
