The Relationship Between Menopause And Depression

Bouts of depression have been observed in women as they near the menopausal stage. Menopausal women tend to have mood swings that, if not treated, may develop into depression. The mood swings are caused by a hormonal imbalance, the result of hormone levels falling below normal levels. As women approach the menopausal stage, their ovaries begin to "dry up" and stop producing as much hormones as before. Most studies found that mood swings and depression develop in pre-menopausal women who had no previous history of mood swings and depression. The studies also found that women tend to ignore the connection between menopause and depression. Many women do not get treatment for their depression because they do not actively seek out the help of a medical professional.

Risks of Depression When Left Untreated

Menopausal women who fail to seek professional help for their mood swings tend to develop migraines and acute depression. The quality of their life becomes affected as well as the quality of life of the people around them. Menopause and depression have been observed, although it hasn't been proved conclusively, to affect marriages. Many marriages break around the time women are between 39 and 47 years old, the pre-menopausal age range. At the onset of mood swings and depression, couples find it hard to maintain a happy married life.

Fighting Depression

The depletion of hormones is widely considered the culprit or the cause of depression and mood swings in pre-menopausal women. In this regard, menopause and depression are directly related. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) are also considered to be effectively counteract depression among menopausal women.

Because of all the changes happening in their bodies, menopausal women are usually in a frequent state of confusion and frustration. They usually feel like they are losing control of their lives. However, they now have a choice to fight their mood swings and bouts of depression, thanks to the advancements made in medical science, especially since the link between menopause and depression is now recognized. There are now various treatments available. What women need to do is to learn how to recognize the problem as soon it occurs and take the first step towards getting the proper and right treatment.
