Itching And Menopause

Skin dryness and itchiness is one of the symptoms of menopause. What causes this particular symptom and how can it be alleviated? This article answers those questions as well as explains the connection between itching and menopause.

What Causes Itching And Menopause

Menopause brings with it a myriad of direct and indirect afflictions to women who are undergoing it. Some common symptoms of menopause are hot flashes, headaches, night sweats, bouts of depression, mood swings and itchy skin.

Itchy Skin During Menopause

A woman's skin dries up and takes on a parchment-like texture during the menopausal stage. This dryness gives the skin a flaky appearance. The skin also appears tight. The flaky appearance is caused by the accumulation of dried skin cells on the skin's surface, which in turn causes itching.

Itching and Menopause

Itchy skin is not always caused by menopause. Even though there is a connection between itching and menopause, other factors can contribute to itchiness. Thus, it is important to get a doctor's diagnosis to determine if menopause or some other condition is causing itchiness in the skin. A proper diagnosis helps in determining the right treatment.

Dehydration and Itchy Skin

Dehydration is the main factor connecting itching and menopause. The lack of moisture in the skin causes the skin to become dry and flaky. Skin moisture can be replenished externally or internally. External replenishment of skin moisture involves using skin moisturizers that are fortified with alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) and vitamins A, C and E. Herbal treatments like castor oil are good alternatives to cosmetics. Internal replenishment of skin moisture involves drinking six to eight glasses of water every day at regular intervals.

Other Factors that Bind Itching and Menopause

During menopause, a woman's body is highly reactive to substances. Thus, great care should be taken to ensure that nothing increases the toxic level in the body. The right and healthy diet is important during menopause. A healthy diet consists of vegetables and nuts and foods that are rich in vitamin B. Moderate, or if possible abstaining from, drinking and smoking is also important.

Vaginal Itching and Menopause

Vaginal dryness is known to occur during menopause. The lack of moisture in the vagina can in turn cause itchiness. Moisturizing creams that contain vitamin E or castor oil can help relieve vaginal itching. However, it should be first ascertained that the itchiness is not caused by fungal or bacterial infection. Thus, when vaginal itching occurs, it is best to consult a doctor first.
