Female Menopause
Menopause not only affects women but men too. The
onset of menopause affects couples both psychologically
and emotionally. This article talks to husbands and
gives them tips on how they can help their wives cope
with female menopause.
How Men Can Help To Cope With Female Menopause
The onset of female menopause can be frustrating and
distressing for both wife and husband, even more so when
they are not prepared for it. It is frustrating and
distressing for the wife because menopause causes her to
feel like she is out of control and have wild mood
swings, bouts of depression, hot flashes and night
sweats. For a woman, it looks like her body is rebelling
against her, which leaves her no clue as to what to do
or how to deal with it.
The onset of female menopause is frustrating and
distressing for the husband (as well as children)
because although he understands that his wife must be
going through a terrible phase, he is helpless. He is
unable to understand why his wife loses her temper
quickly, cries at the drop of a hat and stops
communicating freely anymore.
Both husband and wife tend to find it challenging to
face and cope with the onset of female menopause. In
many instances, it can be a terrifying phase in a
marriage, which can sometimes lead to separation or
divorce. However, if a couple takes time to understand
what it is and what they can expect from it as well as
learn the best ways to deal with it, they can avoid a
lot of grief. There are ways that a husband can help his
wife go through this very challenging time.
Genuinely Listen
Having someone to talk to is important, especially for
woman who is undergoing pre-menopausal or menopausal
symptoms. She needs a husband who genuinely and
patiently listens to her and takes the time to reassure
her. Having a husband who listens earnestly to what his
wife has to say and is sympathetic to her is possibly
the best gift any wife could have. It is priceless
during the onset of female menopause.
Understanding and Accepting Her Mood Swings
A woman who is undergoing menopause is as confused as
the husband is regarding the mood swings she is having.
It is important for a husband to understand that her
wife's mood swings are real and that she is not doing it
in order to be difficult or give him a hard time. What a
husband can do is extend his understanding and patience
when she is having her mood swings and try to help her
make sense of the emotional chaos she is going through.
Being Present
During her female menopause stage, a wife might need her
husband to validate her feelings. A husband needs to try
to be present for his wife, especially during those
times she needs him the most. A husband's presence is
already an invaluable help. A woman in pre-menopause or
already in the menopause stage does not need to hear her
husband saying that her feelings are imaginary. What she
needs is a husband who will actually be there to support
her and constantly give her reassurance.
The menopausal stage is one of the most difficult phases
in a woman's life. A husband who takes a few steps
towards understanding his wife at this time will go a
long way in strengthening their marriage.
