How to Recognize and Cope with Early Menopause

Many women dread menopause not because it marks the end of their fertility but mainly because of the mental and physical upheavals it brings with it. Hot flushes, wild and unexplained mood swings, irregular periods, heavy or scant bleeding and sweating at night are some of the symptoms of early menopause.

How to Recognize the Onset of Menopause

Menopause is one of the many physical developments that women undergo. Menopause sets in at a particular time in women, usually around 45 to 50 years. Thus, the symptoms are manifested around this age. Women who are not prepared for menopause often find that the onset of early menopause is a confusing and distressing time. In order for women to handle menopause, they need to know and understand it.

Symptoms of Early Menopause

An irregular menstrual cycle is one of the first signs of early menopause. Women entering menopause will tend to have a period twice or thrice a month, stop having it for three to four months and then start it again like nothing happened. This particular early menopause symptom usually occurs in women who are between 45 and 47 years, although it has been seen to happen in women who are 50 years and up.

Depression in Women in Early Menopause

Women in early menopause or pre-menopause period tend to have unpredictable and unexplained mood swings. They tend to experience depression. Depression in pre-menopausal women is said to be due to the depletion of estrogen, which is the result of the ovaries shutting down. Pre-menopausal or menopausal women who have acute depression attacks take HRT or hormone replacement therapy to counteract depression and lessen the mood swings that go along with it. However, women should take this kind of medication only under medical supervision. This is because hormones can play havoc with the body if the right balance is not achieved.
